After an exciting period of recruitment and the establishment of a team support group, the inaugural Mayne Women’s Team has been provided with a licence to participate in the QFAW Division 2 Central Competition for 2021.
The group achieved the required minimum number of registered players by the due date as well as meeting all the necessary criteria to gain approval.
The team has been training since November when the first come and try evening was held and the team has been steadily growing since that time. Positions are still available with all interested parties welcome to join in training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm. Enquiries can be made by contacting Russell Ditchburn on 0413274967 or email to president@maynetigers.com.au
In other news, the playing group continues to work steadily towards Season 2021 with excellent numbers at each session.
A range of practice matches have now been arranged for all the four senior sides commencing this weekend with a rare opportunity to meet a team from Central Queensland. The Yeppoon Swans have not been beaten in over six years and wanted to challenge a team from South East Queensland to see how they compared.
The game is set for 5pm this Saturday 6th March at the Hervey Bay Bombers Norm N E McLean Oval. The game has been promoted strongly across the Wide Bay region and promises to be an exciting event for the game in the region. Mayne supporters are encouraged to make the trip and enjoy a weekend away in the delightful Hervey Bay region.
The Tigers will be taking a competitive squad to the game and will be keen to put on a good showing for the locals.
Other games coming up will be a local derby with QAFL club Wilston Grange at Hickey Park on the 13th March for the Seniors and Reserves followed by a home game trial against old rivals the Springwood Pumas on the 27th March.
The Tigers have been very pleased with their additions to the playing squad this year with several quality individuals making their way to Mott Street over the off season.
Cameron Perkins joins the Tigers from West Brunswick Football club in the VAFA. Perkins is a tall key forward who will add some fire power to the Tigers front line. A former Aspley junior who has also spent time at Wilston Grange in the QAFL.
Perkins has also been joined by long term friend Jono Skippen who is a strongly built key defensive player who also shapes as a great addition for the club having already stepped up to help out with a recent fund raising activity. Both Perkins and Skippen were recruited through relationships with the current playing group meaning they have settled in quickly to the club.
Another recruit joining the club is Nick Stevenson, a tall rangy backman from the Warrugal Football club in the Gippsland Football League. Stevenson almost joined in 2020 but was forced to return home due to the vagaries of the COVID restrictions but will be a quality addition for the Tigers in 2021.
The club continues to be impressed with the number and quality of young local players signing this year with notable young rising stars Ryan Doolan and Louis Quin training with the Lions Academy as well.
The Tigers Reserve Grade profile looks every bit as strong as it has been for the last few years with an impressive range of experience and youth striving to secure a position in this team and put pressure on the senior team. Reserves Coach Corey Massingham will be very pleased once again with the choice of player at his disposal in 2021.
In other news, the Kenmore Bears sadly had to drop out of Division 1 at the last moment due to a loss of key players. The competition will now once again consist of only seven teams for 2021.
A busy few weeks coming up now before the Season Launch at the Den on 27th March 2021.
Player Registration is now open at Mayne Registration Form
