The Tigers executed their plan for the Aspley Hornets to perfection today in their clash at Graham Road to run away to a significant win.
The Tigers welcomed back Tom O’Malley, Andrew Housego and Bill Stephens back into the side further bolstering the experience on the side that got over the top of Caloundra last week.
The Hornets looked set for the Tigers as they started off with plenty of spirit to making the first half of the initial quarter tight and exciting, heralding what was expected to be a close game.
However as the quarter wore on the cracks started to appear for the home side. The Tigers forward entries started to come with more regularity providing Luke Faulkner with some welcome opportunities which he duly made the most of to record four goals before the first break. The Tigers broke out to a four goal lead with the Hornets scoring two majors, a score they were unable to improve for the remainder of the game.
The Tigers pressure in the backline was starting to look like the force that has been evident of the last two years as they suppressed every attempt the Hornets made. Taylor Murtha and Dean Hartley were particularly effective in controlling the back half but it was the inclusion of the reliable Tom O’Malley and Bill Stephens back into the group that made it impenetrable.
Once again it was the pace and exciting skills of small men Jasper Craven and Jack Coghlan who set the side alight as they ducked, weaved and sprinted their way around the ground to keep the Tigers going forward.
The work of Zac McLean was also a feature as he and Captain Caleb Brown controlled the middle of the ground for the entire day.
The Tigers have been gradually improving each week adding more talent to the squad as players returned from work commitments and in some cases injury.
The forward line options of Faulkner, Housego and Josh Caldow gave the Hornets some considerable problems to overcome with each one of them hitting some good form to record multiple goals and open up the area for others to capitalise upon.
In the end the Tigers kicked away over the remainder of the game to a comfortable and satisfying win against what was understood to be a reasonably strong Aspley group.
The Tigers will play Moreton Bay at the Moreton Bay Sports Complex next week.
In a competition that continues to excite, the Caloundra Panthers overcame the Maroochy Roos at North Street today to keep everyone on the edge of their seat on a week to week basis.
